A wildlife safari is the classic East African trip — days spent in an open-sided 4x4 tracking lion, elephant, giraffe and the wider savannah ecosystem with a professional driver-guide. Most wildlife safaris are built around one or two reserves rather than rushing between many, giving you time to actually sit with a sighting instead of ticking it off a list.

Game drives typically run at dawn and dusk, when animals are most active and temperatures are cooler, with a rest during the heat of midday. Kenya's Masai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti are the two best-known wildlife destinations in the region, both part of the same wider migration ecosystem.
