Gorilla Trekking
Track habituated mountain gorilla families through highland rainforest.
Mountain gorilla trekking is offered in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park, and in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. A trek involves walking into the forest with an armed park ranger and guide to find a habituated gorilla family, with one permitted hour once the group is located.
Trek duration is unpredictable — it can be under an hour or run most of a day depending on where the gorillas are that morning — and permits are limited and allocated by the national park authority, so they're secured at time of confirmed booking, not at enquiry. Reasonable fitness helps, as terrain is steep and uneven; porters can be hired locally to assist.
