Masai Mara Safari Guide: When to Go and What to Expect

The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's best-known wildlife destination, and for good reason — open savannah grassland, high resident predator numbers, and a location that puts it directly in the path of the Great Migration for part of the year.

What to expect day to day. Most Mara stays are built around two game drives a day, an early one at first light and a second in the late afternoon, with a rest at camp during the hottest hours. A typical short trip is two to three nights, long enough for several drives without feeling rushed; longer stays let you explore different parts of the reserve and conservancy areas bordering it.

Resident wildlife vs. migration. The Mara supports large resident populations of lion, elephant, giraffe and more year-round — you don't need the migration to have a strong safari here. The wildebeest and zebra herds that make up the Great Migration are typically in the Mara from around July to October, but timing shifts with rainfall and can't be scheduled to the day.

Getting there. Most visitors reach the Mara either by road from Nairobi (around 5-6 hours) or by a short scheduled flight (around 45 minutes) — road keeps costs down and adds a Rift Valley viewpoint stop, flying maximises game-drive time.
