Gorilla Trekking in Uganda vs Rwanda: What's the Difference?

Zenzeni Travel Desk 7 Jul 2026 6 min read

Mountain gorillas can be trekked in three places: Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park, and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. Both are excellent, genuinely different experiences.

Permit cost is the most-cited difference — Rwandan permits are priced significantly higher than Ugandan ones, which is part of why many travellers default to Uganda for value. Permit pricing changes periodically, so we confirm current rates at time of booking rather than quoting a fixed figure here.

Terrain and access. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is close to Kigali, with relatively short drives from the capital to the park gate. Bwindi is further from Entebbe/Kampala, but Uganda offers more trekking locations and generally more permit availability, plus the option to combine gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking or other wildlife viewing in the same trip.

The trek itself is broadly similar in both countries: an early briefing, a walk into dense forest with an armed ranger guide, unpredictable duration, and one permitted hour with the gorilla family once found. Neither country can guarantee sighting difficulty or trek length in advance — it depends entirely on where that family happens to be that morning.

If you're combining gorilla trekking with an East Africa safari, Uganda tends to fit more naturally into a Kenya-based itinerary; Rwanda pairs well with Tanzania. Tell us your wider route and we'll suggest whichever makes more logistical sense.
